A New Approach to Hip Replacement

My goal as a joint replacement surgeon is to reduce the debilitating pain and improve the quality of life for my patients who suffer from arthritis. Over the last decade, many new trends have come and gone. Computers, robots, mini incisions, and ad campaigns for new implant designs have all failed to improve results or speed up recovery.

The Anterior Approach to hip replacement, however, does meet both requirements for a true advancement as recovery time is dramatically less and results are improved with the care of an experienced surgeon.

The technique involves lying the patient on their back and operating on the hip joint through a small incision on the front of the thigh. Unlike other hip procedures, there are no muscles cut and other supporting tissues are left intact, allowing for immediate stability and much faster return to activity. The use of X-ray guidance allows for leg length and implant position to be confirmed prior to completion of the procedure which
improves accuracy.

A special operating table is required and Sherman Hospital is one of the very few
centers in the Chicagoland area to make this substantial investment for the benefit of our patients.

Following surgery, most patients may walk with minimal assistance within a few hours. There are no sitting, sleeping, or stair climbing restrictions. Patients may begin showering the day after surgery. Pain medication requirements are typically much less. Hospital stays are reduced and physical therapy needs are limited. Return to driving and sedentary work can often begin by two weeks.

Most patients who may benefit from hip replacement surgery are also candidates for the
Anterior Approach technique. Discussing your condition with an experienced joint replacement surgeon can help determine which option is best for you. As with all surgical procedures, the decision to have a hip replacement is an important one. There are risks and complications which, although very rare, must be considered along with the benefits. It has been my privilege for over a decade to assist thousands of patients with a return to the active lifestyle they demand following joint replacement surgery.
